Mathematics, the language through which we explore the world, contains infinite wisdom and mysteries.
Gauss opened the door to number theory, Euler laid the rational foundation of mathematical analysis, and Leibniz and Newton, almost simultaneously, discovered calculus—unfolding a new dimension of human thought.
They used formulas to depict the order of the universe and ideas to outline the shape of civilization, making mathematics a beam of light that illuminates our understanding of the world.
At Dipont Huayao Collegiate , we have deeply embedded this “spirit of exploration” into education.
Over the past three years, students’ research has already transcended disciplinary boundaries, spanning fields such as the humanities, sciences, business, and the arts.
In the Mathematics Extended Thesis Program, students follow a university-level research framework. Under the guidance of their teachers, they complete topic selection, research, writing, and defense—experiencing a full academic journey just like real scholars.
What’s even more exciting is that the value of this project has long exceeded the paper itself.
Many graduates have mentioned that the Mathematics Paper Project gave them a significant competitive edge in university admissions. Some students even gained inspiration from the project, transferring their research abilities to other disciplines—with several publishing physics papers in international journals.
This experience has made us realize that designing truly interdisciplinary academic projects—ones that integrate knowledge across subjects—is far more meaningful than we imagined.
We hope to cultivate future talents who are not only articulate on paper, but also able to step into the real world and use their knowledge to respond to real challenges.
Thus, as the project enters its fourth year, we are focusing on a real "driving problem" — the "Large Shopping Mall Scenario."
In this project, they will explore questions such as:
How can geometric principles be applied to optimize pedestrian flow and reduce congestion?
How can statistical models be used to analyze consumer patterns and improve spatial efficiency?
Can mathematics serve as a “language of connection” between architectural aesthetics and user experience?
Why Choose a Large Shopping Mall as the Research Scenario?
We chose shopping malls as the research focus because they are both familiar everyday spaces for students and complex enough to support deep interdisciplinary inquiry—perfectly aligning with our teaching goal of extending learning from academics to real-world problem solving.
A large shopping mall is like a miniature society: the flow of people, store layouts, signage designs, and customer dwell times all conceal mathematical logic, and students' everyday experiences become the "material" for research.
More importantly, this scenario naturally lends itself to interdisciplinary learning.
The research involves not only mathematical modeling and data analysis, but also the integration of knowledge across multiple disciplines.
This is precisely the “integration of knowledge” we hope our students will achieve. In such real-world scenarios, they are not only solving problems—they are learning how to use mathematical thinking to influence the world.
