As ecological balance and sustainable development have become global priorities, students from SMCS American High School Division are set to begin a two-day-and-one-night study journey (October 23–24, 2025). This study tour adopts "textbook learning + field investigation" as its core teaching approach, guiding students into the classical gardens of Suzhou to explore the traditional Chinese ecological philosophy of "Harmony between Nature and Humans." From water systems, plants, and animals to spatial composition, students will investigate the complex ecological systems of these historic gardens and experience the balance between nature and culture.

Setting Out with Questions:
Immersive Learning of
the "Harmony between Nature and Humans"

We will embark on this journey with curiosity and questions, diving into an immersive exploration.
What ecological principles (such as nutrient cycling, energy flow, and ecological niches) are reflected in the "underwater forest" of the Humble Administrator's Garden?
How does the philosophy of "Harmony between Nature and Humans" manifest in the ecological design of traditional gardens?
What are the key differences between artificial gardens and natural forest ecosystems?
This field study integrates ecology, environmental science, and traditional Chinese culture, helping students develop a deeper understanding of core ecological concepts, the history of Suzhou gardens, and the elements of classical landscaping. Using the Humble Administrator's Garden as a case study, students will investigate its aquatic ecosystem, recording submerged plant species and analyzing their spatial distribution—gaining ecological insight through observation and practice.

After two days of immersive learning and field investigation, students will not only witness the ecological wisdom embedded in Suzhou's gardens but also transform their observations, reflections, and discoveries into tangible research outcomes.
The following deliverables will serve as the key academic outcomes of this journey:
Applying Knowledge in Practice
Through documentation, analysis, and reflection, students will apply ecological concepts in real-world contexts, deepening their understanding of core ideas such as ecosystems and Harmony between Nature and Humans.
Developing Research and Communication Skills
By collecting data, writing reports, and preparing presentations, students will strengthen their abilities in scientific reasoning, analytical thinking, and teamwork.
Enhancing Cultural Understanding and Sustainability Awareness
Exploring the ecological wisdom embedded in Suzhou's classical gardens will help students appreciate the sustainability principles rooted in traditional Chinese culture and reflect on their relevance in today's world.
Students may choose one of the following three outcomes:
A complete fieldwork record, including written notes, photos, sketches, and data
An analytical report (1,500–2,000 words) on the Suzhou garden ecosystem, focusing on how one ecological principle is reflected in garden design.
A group presentation, comparing the ecological systems of different gardens or exploring how traditional ecological wisdom can be applied in modern contexts.

The two-day itinerary is compact yet enriching—from close observation within the "gardens of gardens" to broader reflections on natural ecology. This journey is not only an application of classroom knowledge but also a deep contemplation on ecological balance and sustainability. Through walking, observing, and sharing, students will discover new perspectives, think critically, and grow together—measuring the expression of traditional Chinese ecological wisdom in the context of the modern world.
