A Milestone|CISK Welcomes The WASC Visiting Committee
Following the comprehensive authorisation of the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Canadian International School Kunshan has become an IB Continuum School.
However, the pursuit of excellence continues unabated. The school has now reached another milestone in its international academic accreditation. Last week, we proudly welcomed the members of the WASC Initial Visiting Committee: Mrs Alana Steward, an international consultant with WASC, and Dr Matthew Jordon Krakowski, a member of the WASC Committee. During their three-day visit, they engaged deeply with our students, parents, teachers, staff, and leadership team, reviewing our programmes and policies, as well as the quality of learning and care that defines daily life at CISK.
The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), headquartered in California, USA, is one of the world’s most influential accrediting bodies. Through its rigorous accreditation process, WASC ensures that schools provide students with high-quality education and comprehensive support for growth.
Schools that achieve WASC accreditation are recognized as having met internationally acknowledged standards in teaching, leadership, operations, and student support. For parents, WASC accreditation serves as a trusted guarantee of educational quality. For students, it means their learning outcomes are internationally recognized, paving the way for further study and future opportunities in a global context.
For CISK, the WASC accreditation drives us to reflect and improve continuously—whether in curriculum design, teacher development, family-school partnership, or student care. Most importantly, students benefit directly: they grow in a safe envinroment experiencing high-quality teaching and learning surrounded by a global-minded community.
In the months leading up to the visit, CISK made thorough preparations by providing initial visit materials and completing and submitting a school description report to WASC. Thanks to valuable insights and authentic feedback from teachers, students and parents, the report accurately reflected the true environment of the school.
The visit
During the three-day visit, Mrs Alana Steward, and Dr Matthew Jordon Krakowski met face-to-face with school leaders, teachers, students, and parents. They stepped into classrooms and gained a deep understanding of CISK’s teaching practices and school culture.
Gaining Insights into School Operations
The WASC visiting committee first toured the campus to gain a comprehensive understanding of CISK's learning and living environment. They then met with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and the Board of Governance to learn about the school's vision and future direction. They also held separate meetings with the marketing and admissions team, the finance representative, the health and safety committee, and support staff.
Listening to Students and Parents
The WASC visiting committee also focused on the people at the heart of the school: students, parents, and teachers. They observed the morning arrival process , listened to representatives from each group, and joined the boarding students for dinner, gathering honest feedback from a variety of sources.
Through classroom observations, recess activities and after-school routines, they gained a real sense of how learning unfolds each day at CISK and how smoothly school life is organised. These direct interactions helped the committee to understand the culture and atmosphere that shape students’ daily experiences.
Constructive and Encouraging Feedback
During the exit meeting, Mrs Alana Steward and Dr Matthew Jordan Krakowski shared valuable insights, for which we are very grateful. They commended the SLT for their people-centred leadership, and the school for its open and collaborative partnership with families. They also recognised CISK's strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, and identified the passion of CISK teachers, the high level of student engagement across classrooms, and the meaningful support provided by shadow teachers as clear strengths. The feedback affirms CISK's progress and provides specific guidance for future growth on the path towards excellence.

通过课堂观摩、课间活动及放学流程,他们很直观地看到CISK每日的学习展开方式以及校园生活的有序运转。这些直接的互动帮助委员会真切感受了塑造学生日常体验的文化氛围。
