Angela

Angela

Cosplay

Behind the seven offers:
Angela and her “media growth story”

Angela
Farragut Class of 2025 Graduate
Admitted to: University of Wisconsin - Madison
The admission letter from the University of Wisconsin-Madison features the words “Communication Arts” prominently. For Liu Ruiyi (Angela), this is not only a ticket to a top-tier institution but also a testament to her three years of high school dedicated to “doing things with passion.” From being a member of the band at Farragut Campus to hosting the school radio station, from participating in community service activities to serving as a museum guide, her journey of growth holds the answer to “how to turn passion into a competitive advantage” — and these seven offers are the best proof of that.

The possibility of being “protected”:
From planning to free growth
“When I was in elementary school, my parents had already planned for me to study abroad, and Farragut was the place that made that plan clear.” Angela recalls that when she chose the international school in the Peace District, it was not only because it was close to home, but also because she was impressed by its philosophy of “rich curriculum and activities.”

Graduation Trip
During her time at Farragut, she gradually came to understand that education is not a one-way process of imparting knowledge, but rather a process in which classroom learning and extracurricular activities nourish each other. The school's platform helped her realize that growth should not be defined, but rather filled with “exploration” — whether it be academic pursuit or the extension of interests, one can find the strength to take root here.
Interest is the best “media class”:
Practice with passion

“The Halloween dance performance and the Double Holiday Carnival band performance are the moments I look forward to most each semester.” As a band member, Angela found a way to connect with others on stage, and this experience of “communicating through passion” became her initial understanding of “media.”

The microphone at the campus radio station gave her another passion a home. “Every week at noon, I would write the theme script in advance and pair it with carefully selected music,” she said. Writing is a way to organize her thoughts, music is the language of emotion, and the radio station is the space where the two collide. Those handwritten scripts and playlists marked “suitable for midday broadcast” have now become the most touching footnotes in her application materials.

Angela visited Phoenix TV and China Daily studios.
The opportunities provided by the school did not end there. After being selected as a tour guide for the Tianjin Museum in the first batch, she went from being unfamiliar with historical commentary to recording bilingual Chinese and English commentary videos with the help of her teachers, and finally giving live commentary for her younger classmates. “This experience gave me a better understanding of ‘how to convey information’ and a deeper understanding of ‘communication’.”

Angela passed the Tianjin Museum guide exam.

Turning “activities” into “growth credits”: From art therapy to diverse practices
“The secret to balancing academics and activities? Make them one and the same.” The art therapy charity project for second-year high school students is the initiative Angela is most dedicated to. When she noticed her classmates struggling with exam stress, she decided to combine art with psychological counseling: first, she researched extensively online to compile the scientific principles behind music therapy; then, she designed a series of courses and classroom activities, using PowerPoint presentations to break down concepts like “why music can alleviate anxiety” and “how drawing can release emotions”; finally, during her weekly psychology class, she introduced this concept to her classmates and guided them through experiencing the effects of art therapy.

Art Therapy Classroom Interaction

“After class, some students said, ‘It doesn't seem so stressful anymore,’ and at that moment, I felt that all the preparation had been worth it.” This six-month-long activity allowed her to truly understand that the essence of media is not one-way communication, but using professional skills to solve real-world problems.

Appeared in a 30-second public service announcement for HOSA BCE
In addition, she teamed up with classmates to participate in the HOSA competition's public service short film project, conveying ideas in a 30-second clip. From scriptwriting to filming and editing, she incorporated the “empathy” she had cultivated at the radio station and the “attention to detail” she had learned from art therapy activities, ultimately qualifying for the global competition.
The “Supporters” of Application Season: Warmth in the Details
“The most challenging part of the application season is choosing schools and writing the main essay, but fortunately, my teacher has been with me every step of the way.” Angela admits that the college counselor's compilation of school information and school selection recommendations based on her characteristics helped her gradually clarify her direction among the many options.

When I got stuck while writing my application essay, my teacher reminded me to revisit the scripts from the radio station — “The line you wrote, ‘Music is the language of silence,’ is the best material.” This thoughtful support made her realize: A strong application is never a solo effort; it's a team of professionals and patient mentors helping you clarify your true direction.

A “secret tip” for future generations:
Don't be afraid to “stray from the beaten path.”
“Be brave enough to explore unknown areas and discover your interests as much as possible.” Looking back on her three years of high school, what Angela wants to share most is that those seemingly “unproductive” attempts—playing in a band, broadcasting on the radio station, and giving museum tours—actually became her most unique advantages when applying to college.

Angela participated in a golf tournament in 2022.

In 2025, Angela participated in the Spartan Race.
“Farragut taught me to dare to make mistakes and dare to persevere.” The first time her voice trembled on the radio station, the first time she forgot her lines while giving a presentation—it was precisely these imperfect experiences that taught her to adjust and grow. This is more valuable than any score.
Pursue your passion, starting from here.

Angela poses for a photo with Yang Xiaoke, founder of Tianjin Farragut School, and Gao Yue, executive principal, at the graduation ceremony.
This fall, Angela will bring her manuscripts, sheet music, and commentary into Madison's classroom. She says she wants to continue exploring the field of media, and this aspiration was already planted in Farragut. As she said in her final broadcast: “Growth is an ongoing journey of departure. What matters is not the destination, but whether you have truly listened to your own voice.” And Farragut's story will always be the warmest backdrop for that journey.
