During the 2025 university application season, Su Yuhan (Ryan) from Farragut School's SR3 class secured offers from top universities such as Vanderbilt University's Mathematics program; the University of California-San Diego; the University of Florida; the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign; the University of California, Irvine; the University of California, Davis; the University of California, Santa Barbara; The Ohio State University, and other top-tier universities.

Ryan's growth trajectory revealed his keen interest in mathematics at an early age. Starting in elementary school, he devoted himself to math competitions, repeatedly winning top rankings in the city and even representing the city team in competitions. Through these intellectual battles, his love for the subject grew ever deeper. At the same time, influenced by his parents, who are medical professionals, he has always been particularly interested in the medical field. Since 2018, he has been actively participating in medical volunteer activities alongside his mother, gaining a deeper understanding of responsibility and dedication through his contributions.

Blooming in a Diverse World
The soccer club was a highlight of Ryan's high school life. Here, he met many friends from different academic programs who shared his passion for the sport. They gathered to watch games, discuss tactics, sweat it out on the field, and strengthen their friendships through laughter and camaraderie. This experience not only enriched his extracurricular life but also taught him the importance of collaboration within a team and growth through competition. The development of these skills proved far more meaningful than the outcome of the games themselves.

He believes that reading allows him to engage in “face-to-face” conversations with people from different eras and backgrounds, absorbing their unique perspectives and helping him better understand the world and approach problems. Particularly fond of mystery novels, he is captivated by their logical structure and strategic elements. This sensitivity to logic has also subtly enhanced his mathematical learning. The school's relaxed reading environment allows him to immerse himself in the world of books at any time, constantly absorbing knowledge and inspiration.

Paving the way for growth with rational planning
When planning his path to studying abroad, Ryan firmly chose the American high school curriculum. In his junior year, he started with subjects that were relatively easy to get a 5 in to build a solid foundation. In his senior year, he consciously chose some liberal arts subjects to balance his knowledge system, while also choosing practical subjects for the future, such as computer science. This gradual and comprehensive course selection strategy not only made his academic background more well-rounded, but also laid the foundation for his future professional studies.

He believed that universities value unique personalities and potential rather than perfect “templates.” When he received Vanderbilt University's offer, he was both surprised and relieved. He felt that the school may have been impressed by his dedication to mathematics, his sense of responsibility demonstrated in volunteer activities, and his comprehensive skills reflected in his diverse interests.

Fly to the vast world

Ryan has his own profound considerations for choosing mathematics, especially applied mathematics. He is well aware that mathematics plays a crucial role in many cutting-edge fields such as technology, economics, medicine, and artificial intelligence. “Mathematics is not only the art of tools, but also the unity of rationality and beauty. Bringing order from the abstract world into reality will be my goal for the future.” This understanding fills him with anticipation for his future professional studies.

When it comes to his college years, Ryan hopes to be able to handle unclear questions more calmly, make decisions when things are uncertain, and find clarity in complex situations. His time at Farragut has already laid the foundation for this: the free and diverse atmosphere there helped him develop an independent spirit, his teachers encouraged him to question things, and talking with his classmates helped him see things from different angles. He knows that real learning isn't about finding the right answers, but about asking questions that matter.


Looking ahead to himself ten years from now, Ryan aspires to become someone who can use his professional knowledge to provide genuine value to society, rather than merely existing as a “tool” driven by numbers. Professor Zhao's words from his statistics class, “The question is more important than the answer,” will also serve as his future “spiritual compass,” guiding him to keep moving forward on his journey of exploration.
