The Global Chinese Debate Championship, jointly organised by the Asian Critical Thinking Education Association and Chinese Oral Communication Education Association, will be held from 6th to 11th August at Harrow LiDe School Hengqin. Now in its eleventh year, this event stands as the largest Chinese-language debate competition in the world, drawing outstanding debaters from top international schools across the globe.
As a leading bilingual school in the Greater Bay Area, Harrow Hengqin is committed to nurturing students’ bilingual communication skills, critical thinking, and a strong sense of Chinese cultural identity. The school not only encourages students to switch seamlessly between Chinese and English, but also places great emphasis on the development of logical reasoning, critical thinking, and public speaking through a reflective education approach. The goal is to shape talented individuals who possess both a global perspective and a deep understanding of Chinese heritage.
Reflective Thinking:
A Core Competency for Future Competitiveness

In today’s globalised education landscape, the ability to think reflectively and critically is considered one of the most vital 21st-century competencies. According to statistics from the Ivy League in the United States:
Harrow Hengqin recognises the transformative power of reflective education. Through debate training, inter-school competitions, and academic enrichment activities, students develop a holistic set of skills – from deep thinking and logical argumentation to clear and persuasive expression. The upcoming Global Chinese Debate Championship offers Harrow students a prime opportunity to challenge themselves and broaden their horizons.
To prepare for the championship, members of the Harrow Hengqin Debate Team have undertaken intensive training during term breaks and the summer holidays.

Voices from Harrow: How Has Debate Shaped
Our Thinking and Expression?

We spoke to several members of the Harrow Hengqin Debate Team to hear how debate has contributed to their personal development:
What I enjoy most about debating is that I get to speak my mind out loud. Every time I stand up to speak, the whole class listens – it’s a special feeling. The biggest change for me is confidence: now I can answer teachers’ questions more boldly. I used to stumble while thinking and speaking at the same time. Now I can give complete and well-structured answers. This way of thinking has also helped me organise my thoughts better when writing essays.
Debating feels like a battle of wits – every exchange of arguments makes me excited. I’ve realised that even small everyday matters can spark deep thought: should queuing in the canteen be strictly enforced? Should school uniforms be abolished? These discussions made me feel like I’m no longer a clueless child. Debate has taught me the importance of seeing things from others’ perspectives. Now, even when I talk to my parents, I ask myself: “Why do they think that way?” “Is their viewpoint reasonable?”
Debate has given me a stage to express myself and greatly broadened my knowledge. I now actively collect data in daily life – tracking borrowing statistics of the library, interviewing librarians, and reading news articles. This process of building up evidence for my arguments feels like piecing together my own knowledge puzzle. The greatest benefit debate has brought me is a more logical way of thinking, and it has also honed my critical thinking skills. Now, when I see sensational headlines online, I question the credibility of the sources and whether the authors are biased. Shifting from passively receiving to actively analysing information makes me feel more independent in my thinking.
Debating helped me discover my strengths. For example, when preparing for the topic “Does social media damage friendships?”, I proposed analysing how often people use emojis in group chats to reflect emotional changes – that became a unique point in our argument. From this, I realised I have a keen eye for observation. But what’s most valuable is that debate has taught me to embrace imperfection. In one round, my performance in the free debate segment wasn’t ideal, but my teacher pointed out that I’d asked a critical question. It made me understand that I don’t need to be perfect throughout.
Debating has enriched my life and introduced me to so much beyond the classroom. While preparing for the topic “Should humans explore Mars?”, I learnt lots of details about the Apollo moon landings. In discussions on AI ethics, I boldly argued that artificial intelligence must always remain under human supervision. I enjoy the thrill of learning new things. The most profound change is that my thinking has become more mature. In the past, when teachers criticised me, I’d feel defensive and resistant. Now I can stay calm and use the ‘three-step method’ to respond: state the facts + analyse the shortcomings + offer solutions. This mindset helps me constantly improve.

According to UNESCO, critical thinking is a defining skill for this generation. We look forward to seeing Harrow Hengqin students showcase their exceptional reflective thinking at the Global Chinese Debate Championship, growing through the clash of ideas and minds!
