当莱斯大学的录取通知页面弹出漫天彩花时,吕嘉傲(Thomas)盯着屏幕愣了三秒,随即爆发出一声带着少年气的惊呼。“我以为拒信也会有彩花特效!”他笑着回忆,“直到看见‘Congratulations’,我才反应过来——录了!真的录了!”这个被莱斯大学生物科学专业选中的男孩,在法拉古特的这几年,把足球踢成了团队的勋章,把吉他弹成了创新的符号,更把对科学的执着熬成了通往顶尖学府的机票。他的故事,藏着太多不按常理出牌的精彩。

初遇法拉古特:一场理念的共鸣
Thomas的成长字典里,从来没有 “死读书” 三个字。父母从小就教他“把知识掰碎了用”,鼓励他跳出课本去摸爬滚打 —— 这种“探索至上”的基因,让他一踏进校园就和法拉古特撞了个满怀。

Thomas与科学的缘分,始于一场水火箭实验。刚入学时,对物理爱得深沉的他,被命运般分到了元老师的班级。这位物理 “大神” 班主任像发现了璞玉,直接把他拉进了水火箭项目组。“那时候只觉得公式很有趣,但元老师带我真正‘玩’了起来。”从计算流体力学到调整发射角度,他和老师一起把课本知识变成了飞向天空的实践。

即便后来只有他一人选修北美课程方向物理1,元老师依然为他量身定制辅导计划,最终助他拿下满分。“科学不是死记硬背,而是解决问题的工具。”Thomas说:“这段经历让我明白,兴趣可以变成专业,而专业更需要兴趣的支撑。”

十年级转入3班时,Thomas原以为会感到陌生,却很快被温暖包裹。班主任孙老师的关照细致入微,课堂上耐心答疑,生活里贴心叮嘱,让陌生的环境也透着家的暖意。

足球是Thomas刻在骨子里的热爱。十年级那年,Thomas做了一件全校瞩目的事——重建已解散的足球社。“看到那么多热爱足球的同学无处可去,我觉得必须做点什么。”他跑遍学校各部门,联系校外场地,作为足球社的 “重建者”,他的领导力体现在对细节的精准把控和对队员的深度关怀上。训练前,他会和教练逐字逐句敲定计划,针对不同队员的短板 “对症下药”:速度快但控球弱的,就练小范围传接球;控球强但射门不准的,就专攻射门训练。

“Thomas and His Friends”乐队就这样诞生了。他不仅集结了志同道合的同学,更向音乐老师发出邀请,这位专业的打击乐手的加入,让乐队跳出了学生组合的局限。排练时,原主唱遇高音瓶颈,他又大胆邀请钢琴手的声乐家母亲加盟,既解决了问题,更让学生、老师、家长的跨界合作成为亮点。

这份魄力源自过往:组建乐队时,他曾因队友临时退出而失落,是老师的包容让他获得与教师乐队同台的机会。“自己淋过雨,就给别人撑伞”,因此他特意为原主唱组建新乐队,让每个人的才华都能绽放。最终两支乐队在嘉年华上双双成功。

When the Rice University acceptance page popped up with a sky of colorful flowers, Thomas stared at the screen for three seconds, then erupted into a teenage-tinged gasp. “I thought the rejection letter would also have colorful flower effects!” he recalls with a laugh. He recalls with a smile, "It wasn't until I saw ‘Congratulations’ that I realized - it was recorded! I was really accepted!" This boy, who was selected by Rice University's biological sciences program, has spent his years at Farragut kicking a soccer ball into a team medal, playing the guitar into a symbol of innovation, and simmering his obsession with science into a plane ticket to a top institution. His story harbors so much off-the-wall excitement.

Meeting Farragut for the first time: a resonance of ideas
Thomas never had the word “reading” in his vocabulary. His parents taught him from an early age to “break knowledge into pieces” and encouraged him to go beyond the textbook to explore - a gene of “exploration first” that led him to collide with Farragut as soon as he stepped into the campus. He was in a full-on collision with Farragut as soon as he stepped foot on campus.

Thomas' love affair with science began with a water rocket experiment. When he first enrolled in school, he was assigned to Mr. Yuan's class as fate would have it. Like a diamond in the rough, the physics teacher pulled him into the water rocket program. “At that time, I only thought the formulas were interesting, but Mr. Yuan took me to really ‘play’ with them.” From calculating hydrodynamics to adjusting the launch angle, he worked with his teacher to turn textbook knowledge into the practice of flying into the sky.

Even though he was later the only one to take the North American Curriculum Direction Physics 1, Mr. Yuan still customized his tutoring plan, which ultimately helped him earn a perfect score. “Science is not rote memorization, but a tool for problem solving.” Thomas said, “This experience made me realize that an interest can turn into a major, and a major needs even more support from an interest.”

When he was transferred to Class 3 in 10th grade, Thomas thought he would feel unfamiliar, but he was soon wrapped in warmth. Ms. Sun, the homeroom teacher, was meticulous in her care, patiently answering questions in class and giving thoughtful advice in life, making the unfamiliar environment feel like home.

During the three years, Ms. Sun's passionate care has never been absent, academic guidance, growth in the company, not only let him walk steadily through the whole high school, but also let this time because of the fullness and shine. This teacher's favor, he always remembered in his heart.

Thomas' growth on the soccer team
Soccer is a love that Thomas carves into his bones. In 10th grade, Thomas did something the whole school noticed - rebuilt the disbanded soccer club. “Seeing so many soccer-loving students with nowhere to go, I felt compelled to do something.” He ran through all the school departments, contacted off-campus venues, and as the “rebuilder” of the soccer club, his leadership was reflected in his precise control of the details and deep care for the players. Before training, he would finalize the plan word by word with the coach, and “prescribe the right medicine” for the shortcomings of different players: those who are fast but weak in ball control would practice small-scale passing and receiving; those who are strong in ball control but inaccurate in shooting would specialize in shooting training.

The tension before a game is like an invisible net, which he can always skillfully defuse. He would share his own experience of how he transformed his negative emotions into motivation after he was frustrated in playing soccer, and used his own story to tell his teammates, “Adversity is not a stumbling block, but a ladder for growth.”

He understands that the strength of a team lies not in the individual players, but in each player finding his or her place. Today, the Soccer Club is one of the most active clubs on campus, and Thomas' philosophy of leadership is simple, “Taking charge isn't about giving orders, it's about making everyone believe they matter.” Under his leadership, the soccer club is no longer just a place to train, but has become a big family full of support and trust.

“Being a part of and contributing to the Agents of Change community at Rice University” is a belief that Thomas has buried deep in his heart. When news of the upcoming Double Day Carnival arrived, he knew that the opportunity to live out this belief had come - to form a band that would break the mold and allow diverse talents to blossom on stage.

The band “Thomas and His Friends” was born. He not only gathered like-minded students, but also invited the music teacher, a professional percussionist, to join the band, so that the band jumped out of the limitations of the student group. During rehearsals, the original lead singer encountered a high pitch bottleneck, and he boldly invited the pianist's mother, a vocalist, to join the band, which not only solved the problem, but also made the cross-border cooperation among students, teachers and parents a highlight.

This boldness comes from the past: when he formed the band, he was lost when his teammates temporarily quit, and it was his teacher's tolerance that gave him the opportunity to share the stage with the teacher's band. “If you've been in the rain yourself, hold an umbrella for someone else,” so he purposely formed a new band for the original lead singer so that everyone's talent could blossom. In the end both bands were doubly successful at the carnival.


For Thomas, this experience of connecting multiple forces and taking the temperature of the individual is at the heart of his understanding of what it means to be an “agent of change” - and this is the power he wants to bring to the university community.

Rice's Favor:A Two-Way Fit with Professional Guidance
“ED Shenlais?” Initially, even Thomas himself was hesitant about the choice. But Farragut's guidance counselor saw something unique in his list of activities: the academic potential of a perfect score in physics in the North American Orientation course, the community-building ability to rebuild the soccer club, and the cultural inclusiveness of forming a crossover band - qualities that fit well with Rice's philosophy of being an “agent of change”. These qualities are highly compatible with Rice University's philosophy of being an “agent of change”.

The teachers not only pinpointed this fit, but also poured their hearts and souls into polishing the application materials. They guided Thomas to connect the water rocket program with the spirit of discovery in the biological sciences, and to distill his band management experience into a “community collaboration methodology,” so that each piece of material accurately conveyed his resonance with the spirit of Rice.

In the end, Thomas became the only 2025 ED student to be accepted to Rice University.
