Andy L.
更多学子绽放光彩

在哈罗横琴低年级,优秀的中文学习者远不止Andy L.一位。在2025年“阅读之星”——全国青少年阅读风采展示活动(中文组)中:

G3 Kim L. 同学
荣获小中组(G3-G4)一等奖

G5 Derek G. 同学
荣获小高组(G5-G6)一等奖

哈罗横琴的低年级中文教育不仅在培养语言应用能力上成效显著,更在文化传承、思辨表达、阅读素养等方面为学生奠定了坚实基础。
从核心课程的语言建构,到拓展课程的阅读积淀,再到探究课程的文化浸润,哈罗横琴低年级的中文教育体系全方位助力学生成长。我们期待更多学子在这里找到自己的语言天赋,成为兼具国际视野与中国根基的未来人才!

At Harrow Hengqin, we firmly believe that language is not only a tool for communication, but also a vehicle for developing higher-order thinking and a bridge for cultural exchange. Recently, Andy L., a G5 student, has shone in multiple language competitions. He not only won first place in the school’s bilingual “Hope and Dreams” speech contest but also received the Outstanding Reading Award at the 8th Shenzhen Primary and Secondary School English Speaking and Debate Competition.

As one of Harrow Hengqin’s founding students, Andy L.’s development exemplifies the outstanding results of the school’s bilingual education. So, what exactly is Harrow Hengqin’s approach to Chinese education in Lower School? Let’s explore from the curriculum framework.

Core Curriculum
Building a Solid Language Foundation
and Cultivating Practical Skills

The Chinese curriculum at Harrow LiDe School, Hengqin, is composed of Core Courses, Enrichment Courses, and Inquiry-Based Courses, reflecting the school’s distinctive approach. It places a strong emphasis on developing students’ reading skills and critical thinking in Chinese. In lower school, the Core Chinese Courses are based on the national curriculum and structured around thematic learning tasks and project-based learning. The programme focuses on enhancing students’ ability to use language effectively, with
particular emphasis on advanced language skills such as recitation, public speaking, and debating.

Emphasising Language Practice and
Creating Platforms for Learning Showcase
Unlike traditional approaches to Chinese education, Harrow Hengqin’s Chinese curriculum places a particular emphasis on the practical application of language. The school is dedicated to creating a variety of platforms for students to showcase their Chinese, ensuring that every pupil has the opportunity to take part in events such as bilingual speech competitions, the AISL Chinese Debate Competition, and the AISL Harrow Huasheng Champions-Recitation and Public Speaking Contest. Andy L., for example, not only participated in the bilingual speech competition but also joined the school’s debate team, receiving systematic training in both logical thinking and expressive language skills.

Fostering Cross-Cultural Communication to Integrate Bilingual Skills
By the time students reach the final year of Lower School, many outstanding learners can provide simultaneous interpretation between Chinese and English. This is thanks to our school’s high standards for precise bilingual comprehension and expression. (On the assembly stage, you can often see G5 students interpreting live for foreign teachers.)

Extension Curriculum
Whole-Book Reading to Build Cultural Literacy

Reading is the cornerstone of language learning. In the lower years, the Chinese Enrichment Course centres on whole-book reading, incorporating both required and optional texts. This approach helps students develop effective strategies for reading complete books, moving beyond the traditional focus on isolated texts and addressing the limitations of single-passage learning in conventional Chinese education.

Scientific Reading Methods
Andy L. is passionate about reading, and our school’s Chinese curriculum has taught him how to read whole books efficiently — including setting reading goals, making plans, and writing reading notes. In every Chinese reading lesson, teachers thoughtfully design activities that are both engaging and challenging, sparking students’ enthusiasm for reading.

✦
Immersive Reading Environment
Our school has carefully designed a library reading area that fosters a rich literary atmosphere. There is a fixed daily reading time at lunchtime, during which students are free to choose their books, making reading a regular habit.

Inquiry Curriculum
Deepening Cultural Confidence
and Inheriting China’s Treasures

Language learning is inseparable from cultural immersion. In lower school, inquiry-based courses such as Chinese Culture Week and “Intangible Cultural Heritage in Schools” allow students to experience the richness of traditional Chinese culture up close.

Experiencing Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage
During this year’s Chinese Culture Week, Andy L. and his classmates had the opportunity to explore and experience traditional intangible cultural heritage practices such as calligraphy and painting mounting restoration, seal carving, and tie-dyeing. Through collaboration, sharing, and inquiry, they deepened their appreciation for and connection to Chinese culture.

Dialogue with Intangible Cultural
Heritage Inheritors
Students had face-to-face exchanges with heritage inheritors, learning not only the skills but also the craftspeople’s spirit of excellence, further enhancing their cultural confidence.

Not Just Andy L.
More Students Shining Brightly

In Harrow Hengqin Lower School, outstanding Chinese learners are far more than just Andy L. At the 2025 Chinese Group of the Star of Reading, National Youth Reading Talent Show :

G3 student Kim L.
won first prize in the G3-4 group

G5 student Derek G.
won first prize in the G5-6 group

Harrow Hengqin Lower School Chinese education is not only highly effective in bilingual proficiency but also lays a solid foundation in cultural inheritance, critical thinking and expression, and reading literacy.
From the core curriculum’s language construction, to the extension curriculum’s reading accumulation, and the inquiry curriculum’s cultural immersion, Harrow Hengqin’s Chinese education system for the Lower School supports students’ development in all dimensions. We look forward to more students discovering their linguistic talents here and becoming future talents with both an international perspective and strong Chinese roots!
