Primary Years: Active Learning｜小学部：主动学习

Grade 1 students had a wonderful time exploring their place in the world — from Earth to China, Dongguan, and ASJ — as part of their Unit of Inquiry, showing growing awareness of the world around them. In Maths, they excitedly began learning about measurement, while in Literacy, they enjoyed revisiting the silent /e/ and discovering how this little letter can completely change a word’s sound and meaning!

Students worked in groups to research and design displays comparing life a long time ago and today. Using their iPads, they explored how different countries and cities have changed over time.

This week, the students in Grade 3 have been exercising their brains to build and strengthen their vocabulary by learning how to use dictionaries. By focusing on the first, second, and third letters, the students explored various dictionaries not only to discover words and their definitions but also to arrange words in the order they would appear in a dictionary.

Grade 4 students have been gaining hands-on experience by conducting an archaeological dig around the school. Students have discovered the scattered remains of artifacts and ancient buildings from the Ancient Mayan civilisation and have used them to begin analysing the nature of the lost city.

Grade 5 students explored the concept of migration in depth by investigating a variety of animal species. They learned about the different reasons why animals migrate, such as searching for food, escaping harsh weather conditions, finding safer habitats, or reproducing.

To begin exploring the interdependence among living organisms in ecosystems, students engaged in a learning activity involving coloured string. Each student was connected to others, creating a complex interconnected structure. If any strand was pulled too hard and broke, the student attached to that string was excluded from the system, illustrating how the removal of one part can disrupt the balance of the ecosystem. This hands-on approach emphasised the reliance of living things on one another for survival.

Before kicking off their main unit project, students dove into basic perspective and mixed media to create thrilling visual pieces. Through exploring the unknown, they had a truly enjoyable and fulfilling time making art.

The new unit, "Where We Are in Place and Time," began with focused listening. Students across all grades actively engaged as critical listeners, discovering new musical knowledge and history by identifying instruments, cultural origins, and emotional qualities within diverse musical examples.

It was a fantastic start to our "Creating Media" unit, with students across all grade levels actively exploring digital tools. They were highly engaged in their first practical tasks, from digital photography to website creation, building a strong foundation for the weeks ahead.

Students immersed themselves in the enchanting world of fairy tales. Through  reading, they explored the rich imagination that defines the genre, focusing on the personification of animals and plants. Students engaged in thoughtful discussions about the deeper messages and life lessons these stories convey, enhancing their literary appreciation and critical thinking skills.

This week, the second-grade students engaged with the classical poem "On the Stork Tower" through an active learning framework. The core activity was a collaborative exercise where one group recited the poem while a parallel group translated the verses into illustrations, thereby converting text into imagery to deepen their collective interpretation. Following this, students connected the poem's philosophical theme to their personal lives, discussing what it means to "aim high and gain perspective" in their own contexts, which led to a more profound internalisation of the poem's enduring wisdom.

Students selected their own books in the library for the new unit of inquiry, demonstrating their ownership of learning. This allowed students to tune in and encouraged them to engage with their new topics.

Students successfully tackled sequential addition, sequential subtraction, and mixed-operation problems. They demonstrated strong comprehension by accurately interpreting scenarios from pictures and formulating correct number sentences using addition and subtraction within 10 to find the solutions. Their ability to apply these skills marks significant progress in foundational problem-solving.

Active learning is essential in sports activities. Instead of passively receiving instructions, students now actively ask questions, analyse movements, and share experiences with teammates. This proactive approach leads to a deeper understanding of motor skills and accelerates their progress.

This week, the Spanish lesson exemplified active learning. They moved beyond passive listening, engaging with six colour terms through interactive games and physical gestures. To solidify their understanding, they undertook the practical task of handwriting each word. This act of writing helped secure the correct spellings in our memory more effectively than mere reading. By actively doing and creating, they truly began to master the new vocabulary.
