Deep Dive: A Multi-Dimensional Collision of British Arts and Culture
Museums and Galleries: Dialogue Spaces of Civilisations
Museums and galleries in the UK are not lofty spaces removed from daily life, but classrooms that bring art and history to life.

In Edinburgh's Scottish National Gallery, Rembrandt’s deep strokes, Monet’s vivid light, Van Gogh’s intense emotion, and Da Vinci’s precise lines come together. Students sketched and discussed the works, experiencing the power of light and emotion in the hands of masters.

At Leeds Art Gallery, 19th-20th century British art flows like a river, making the museum a perfect window into the evolution of British art. "On-site assignments" brought warmth to the viewing experience: each student selected an exhibit to create a custom cover—interpreting romance through Millais' paintings and exploring space through Henry Moore's sculptures. These spontaneous thoughts quietly became seeds of future creations.

Stepping into the British Museum felt like initiating a dialogue across time. From the Rosetta Stone’s mysterious hieroglyphs to the ancient inscriptions on Chinese Shang and Zhou bronzes, every artifact carries the long memory of Eastern and Western civilisations. As they followed the guide, students engaged in passionate discussion on the meaning of cultural preservation.

The Tate Modern offered a visual feast of modern and contemporary art. Picasso’s Cubist works shattered traditional perspectives, while Yayoi Kusama’s “Infinity Mirror Rooms” led viewers into dreamlike realms woven from light and reflection. Amid the clash of steel architecture and expressive works, students felt the power of art to transcend boundaries.

Urban Texture: The Soil Where Art Grows
As students walked through cities in the UK, they discovered that art is never confined to the walls of a museum.
The ancient streets of Edinburgh themselves form an open-air gallery. Even the relief sculptures on doorframes whisper stories from centuries past—every step students took felt like walking through layers of artistic history.
The streets of Glasgow read like a living book of art: the stone carvings in George Square capture the glory of the Industrial Age, while on Buchanan Street, vintage charm and modern trends collide in window reflections.
Manchester’s Northern Quarter is a fermenting jar of creativity: among its weathered bricks flows the spirit of freely growing art. Spontaneous and vibrant expressions breathe unconventional inspiration into every corner.
London’s art neighbourhoods are equally captivating. Places like Notting Hill bring the idea of "Art integrated into everyday life" vividly to life.

Visiting Top Universities: Artistic Insights from Academic Halls
During the two-week journey, students left their footprints not only in museums and city streets but also inside prestigious universities, gaining direct insight into the structure and spirit of British art education.

Edinburgh College of Art, a beacon of art education in Scotland, welcomed students into its workshops. Guided by faculty, they immersed themselves in an atmosphere of creative freedom. The school’s long-standing tradition and open academic philosophy deeply conveyed respect for individual artistic expression.

Glasgow School of Art, a globally renowned institution, features iconic architecture designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Its collision of steel structures and elegant curves embodies the integration of art and urban identity.

At the University of Leeds, comprehensive campus facilities—like bubble tea shops and gyms—blend seamlessly with academic spaces. This natural integration of “art in everyday life” created a relaxed, inviting atmosphere that left a lasting impression, planting the seed of a dream school in many students’ hearts.

The University of Manchester, rich in academic heritage and urban diversity, combines Gothic architecture with modern facilities. Its art education thrives at the interdiv of scholarship, sports, and city culture, radiating inclusive energy.

The three universities visited in London each stood out in their own way: University College London (a G5 elite university) is renowned for its academic excellence, and its Slade School of Fine Art emphasises practical and interdisciplinary approaches. Kingston University is known for creative arts, with strong industry ties and hands-on learning. The University of Westminster excels in media and art design, with industry-aligned courses and abundant urban resources for real-world experience.

Through these visits, students not only deepened their understanding of each university’s strengths but also gained clearer perspectives on the diverse pathways in art and design—leaving them feeling truly enriched by the experience.

The Highlight: Immersive Experience at the UAL Summer School

As the centrepiece of the summer school, Central Saint Martins impressed students with its unique teaching style. Professors infused cross-disciplinary thinking into their lessons—from material experimentation to conceptual deconstruction—turning each class into a surprising art adventure. With vivid case studies and open discussions, students were instantly hooked. After a week of immersive learning, students became fans of their UAL professors—not just for the skills taught, but for opening doors to an entirely new world of art. Their global perspective took a huge leap forward!

This summer school was tailored for students of different ages and interests, with five major tracks: Fashion Design (ages 16-18), Art and Design (ages 11-15), Streetwear Fashion (ages 16-18), Illustration (ages 16-18), and Portfolio Preparation (ages 16-18). UAL professors adopted project-based learning to break away from the stereotypical "checklist-style" experience, enabling each student to discover their own creative rhythm.
本次夏校针对不同年龄段与兴趣方向的学生量身设计,涵盖Fashion Design(时尚设计,16—18岁)、Art and Design(艺术与设计,11—15岁)、Streetwear Fashion(街头时尚,16—18岁)、Illustration(插画,16—18岁)及Portfolio Preparation(作品集准备,16—18岁)五大专业方向。

Through project-based learning, students experienced UAL’s distinctive teaching methods in a structured way. In the Fashion Design course, they explored the full process-from concept development to 3D pattern cutting. These raw and honest attempts turned out to be more powerful than so-called "perfect" works.
In the Art and Design group, students experimented with cross-media creation. In the process of opening their minds, they discovered that "Art can take any form."
The Streetwear Fashion track focused on subculture research and the reinterpretation of trend elements. Students were amazed: “I didn’t know street culture could be so sophisticated!”
In the Portfolio Preparation course, professors guided students using UAL’s admission standards, helping them refine the narrative logic of their portfolios.
Students in the Illustration course broke traditional drawing boundaries and explored hybrid techniques that mixed digital and hand-drawn elements.
Everyone agreed: attending class at Central Saint Martins felt like entering an artistic paradise. The intense creative energy was truly captivating!

Awakening the Artistic DNA
By the end of the journey, students’ sketchbooks were filled, their cameras packed with thousands of photos—but what they carried inside was a growth more vivid than any image. Let’s hear their true reflections:
Which summer school course did you enroll in, and what did it include?
I took the Illustration course. It covered theory like illustration appreciation, history, and composition. The class also had creative exercises like "one-minute blind drawing" of objects and live illustration based on a song’s melody and lyrics.
I joined the Portfolio Preparation course. Each day focused on a different technique. For example, the first day was drawing or copying existing artworks, the second focused on printmaking and idea expansion, and the third was about collage. Every task encouraged creative exploration.
I enrolled in the Fashion Design course, themed around "Wrapping and Unwrapping". We created texture collages using fabric and magazine cutouts, conducted library research on the wrapping technique and two designers known for it, sketched design ideas with clear material references, and finally brought the designs to life on mannequins.
It really pushed my creativity——fashion design is demanding! The other students’ designs were so impressive, I was shocked and learned a lot. It was my first try, so I wasn’t fully satisfied with my outcome, but the UAL teachers were incredibly encouraging, always saying “Amazing!” I realized they value the creator’s thought process, research, and execution more than perfection.
What was your biggest takeaway from the summer school? How has your understanding of art changed afterward?
My biggest takeaway was understanding how illustration courses are structured abroad. The pace is fast—sometimes we had to finish a piece within an hour (though not mandatory to finish). Before, I focused mainly on drawing technique. After the summer school, I realized that technique is just a tool—what matters more is the core idea, the message, and how effectively it’s communicated visually.
I learned many new creative techniques, like using soft rubber plates and magazines to transfer images—those really made the process more fun. Before, I was confused about how to organise my portfolio and didn’t know where to start. The summer school teachers taught us how to structure it—like showing the final piece first, then the details—so it becomes logical and persuasive. I now have a clearer understanding of how to convey ideas through artwork!
This summer school helped me experience how international art education differs—it emphasises independent exploration and creative expression. At UAL, teachers don't limit your medium or method. Instead, they guide you to discover your own inspiration. I've come to understand that art is not just about being 'beautiful' or 'proper', but about unique thinking and personal expression. I truly resonate with this freedom to create.
“
Conclusion
From Edinburgh's historical echoes to London's artistic feast, this summer journey allowed students to experience the many dimensions of art in motion. UAL's classrooms expanded the boundaries of creativity, visits to top universities planted seeds of aspiration, and the artistic details in every street corner confirmed the truth that "Life itself is art". In the future, we hope more students will carry this "Inspiration born through exploration" and bloom freely in the world of art.
